I’ve had so many types of experiences in my life, from making a new life in a foreign country, putting hands-on on real-life cars and fixing them, to actually being part of a student council, National Ed Equity Lab Honor Society, and National Honor Society all at once, but I never thought about the experience of being a news writer.
Being a News Writer has changed the way I see my surroundings. Since writing a story requires research and sources, now I know so many things I never knew before getting into Journalism Class in my Junior year, for example, the greatest performing high schools and the most underperforming high schools in NYC; I’ve learned about Martin Luther King Jr. a little more, theoretical physics concepts like Antimatter and much more. However, only some things had to be informative articles, right? So because the fact that in Journalism, we used to write about whatever we wanted to, I shifted from Informative articles to point-of-view articles like one of the first stories that I uploaded to the newspaper about Honduran Migration, as well as the world choosing Electric Cars as the future, and another perspective of seeing Art.
Being part of the Newspaper Team has taught me so much that it would not be enough for me to put everything I learned in one article; it’s impossible. It also awakened my interest in Journalism in general. When I had to do program and college applications, if there was an option where I could show interest in Journalism, I always picked yes because this class made me love making stories, reports, photo essays, and articles.
But wait, that’s not it! Because guess what? Journalism has made my writing skills go sky-high! This is personally one of the best traits I took out of the class because, if you didn’t know, I am an immigrant from Honduras, which means that I am an English Language Learner, and being part of the Newspaper Team has helped me understand, pronounce, write, and speak much more fluent English than before.
I will miss the Journalism class next year when I’m a senior because even though we had to write and think a lot, we always had fun together. Nowadays, there are few classes where you can do what you must and still have fun on the way. Thank you so much to all the readers who took some of their valuable time to read my stories and my peers’ stories. Your support, attention, and comments are what kept us going and not giving up. We were a unique and creative Team, and I hope the Newspaper Team next year is not like us but WAY better, so we could be not only in NYC’s, U.S.’s, Australia’s, or France’s radars but in every country’s radar and read our stories. Again, I appreciate everyone who was part of the first A-Tech Newspaper experience, and my final message is to keep the support because this is not it; the newspaper will keep going next year, the next one, and the next.
