Encouraging Outside Recycling Habits at A-Tech High School

An out of the ordinary idea

Recycling has been around for a little time in our communities; it’s barely practiced considering the current world population (8 billion). But that doesn’t mean it is too late for A-Tech to start making changes around our area. Instead, we are on time now that the planet could still be saved in some aspects!

Takeaways and what could be earned

Provided by Waste Management World

Have you ever seen New Yorkers around your neighborhood with bags of cans, bottles, and glasses in them? If you have, let me tell you that it is genuinely lucrative; some even make more than $100 a day if they dedicate themselves to doing it until the evening. Now, what if A-Tech students recycle around Williamsburg and Greenpoint after school? This would grant them the ability to contribute to the world crisis while also being able to get the following:

Money from the recycle return.

Experience on what, how, where, and when they should recycle.

Possible volunteer hours (High School Graduation Requirement).

Improve Teamwork Skills if students decide to do it in groups (highly recommended).

How do we start this initiative?

Provided by 225 Magazine

A-Tech can start this initiative by creating a “Recycling Club” after school, as previously mentioned, and let their students support climate change while teaching them another side hustle or a way to make passive money, and also helping to clean the neighborhoods, as well as having fun with classmates and friends!. The “Recycling Club” Could be done at least once a week to keep consistency, and hours may vary depending on students’ schedules, for example:

Seniors: Could be from 2pm-4pm

Juniors: Could be from 3pm-4:30pm

Sophomores and Freshmen: Could be from 4pm-5:30pm

Now, what if there are sophomores, freshmen, or juniors who finish their classes as early as the end of the 8th or 9th period? No problem. They would have the option to blend in with either grade if that’s their choice. The important thing is their desire to participate in the activity and have a fun and productive time.

Let us know if you are interested in making this happen for future A-Tech after-school activities. Students, Teachers, and Staff are more than welcome to participate as well. Everything is better when done with company.

Do you want to suggest any changes or additions to the ideas already proposed? Do not hesitate to do so in the comment section below. There are no silly suggestions!!! Please feel free to tell us what you think.

Let’s get involved, A-Tech!

Hey there! It's great to meet you. My name is Michael Flores, and I'm a junior at A-Tech High School. I'm a big fan of taking pictures of landscapes, especially sunsets and sunrises, and I love playing soccer with my friends and family. I've been playing on my high school soccer team since 2023, and I'm proud to say that we had an awesome season this year, with 8 wins and only one loss. Plus, we made it to the playoffs after four long years. I'm super excited to be joining the Student Council at my school soon, and I'm already an active member of the National Honor Society and the National Ed Equity Lab National Honor Society. I'm also going to be part of the Newspaper Club very soon. Social studies is one of my favorite subjects, but my absolute favorite is Automotive. I'm going to graduate from high school as an automotive technician, which is a dream come true for me since I've always loved cars. I remember playing with car tires and toy cars when I was little, and now I get to work on real cars. How cool is that? Since coming to the U.S, I've been lucky enough to receive some amazing accolades and be part of some fantastic events like Aspen Challenge and Microsoft. Next up, I'm going to City Hall in New York to meet the Mayor, thanks to a United Nations program that I'm a part of. I'm proud to say that I've received five Student of The Month certificates, two certificates of participation, and lots of completion certificates. I've even got trophies for Principal Awards, Academic excellence in science, Spanish, and music, and an Aspen Challenge trophy. My goals for the future are to become a successful Automotive technician and ensure my family and loved ones always have the best of the best. Some fun facts about me: I'm originally from Villanueva, Cortes, Honduras, and I might even have some Jamaican and Indian blood in me. I moved to Brooklyn, NY in 2019 with only a basic knowledge of English, so I'm really proud of how far I've come. And, even though I'm not a big fan of veggies or fruits, I'm always up for trying new things. I want to leave you with a little advice. Patience is key, and being kind to others is always important. You never know when you might need help, or when someone else might need your help. So, wherever you go, make sure you always leave your mark and be kind. Thanks so much for reading all about me. If you ever want to get in touch, feel free to DM me on Instagram, or drop me an email at.
